I am in the middle of a bitter fight with
AT&T/SBC in Illinois. I had
AT&T's phone service along with their DSL hi-speed internet connection.
Everything was fine till I moved to a new
apartment. When I called AT&T to move my services, I was told that my
new apartment did not have DSL service available.
I need to have hi-speed internet access
for my work and, so asked AT&T if I could
cancel the whole package because of this.
The customer service rep I spoke to said
that I could do so without incurring any penalty charges.
I had a 12-month contract for my DSL but
did not have any contract for my phone connection.
Since AT&T was not providing my
DSL service anyway in my new apartment, I was pretty sure that things
would be fine.
That was till
last week when I received a bill for an
"early termination fee"
of $99.
I called AT&T to get things straight.
After being put on hold and having been transferred a few times, I
reached the DSL department.
The guy over there said that I should pay
the early termination fee. He also said that I should have gotten only
the phone connection transferred to avoid this early termination fee. He
refuses to understand that I did NOT have any contract for my phone
connection and that I had a contract only for the DSL which AT&T was not
providing in the new apartment!!!
Can someone tell me what I could do now?
Can I refuse to pay this early
termination fee?
Is there some regulatory authority with
whom I file this complaint?
