My 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier sometimes unexpectedly stalls at stop lights.

I'd say about half of the time, my car runs great.  But from time to time when approaching a stop sign/light or a slow down in traffic, I put the clutch in, and my RPM's drop down below typical 800-900 idle RPM's to about 300-400.

Usually once it does that, the car stalls and dies on me.  If I restart it right away and don't give it any gas, it dies again.

The problem persists for a while and the only way to tell when it will stop is if I can go to a complete stop with the clutch in and the RPM's never fall below 500.

I recently replaced the fuel filter, which had quite a bit of gunk in it, but was not horrible.  The car seemed to perform better, but the problem came back a few hours later.

Someone told me to check the lock-up torque converter solenoid or the injection control system, but I'm not comfortable getting into that detailed of work myself.

Hopefully, if someone has a general idea of what it could be, please reply as soon as you can.
